Discover Life

January 2008 was a rough year with a slip on the ice resulting in a broken tibia, fibia & ankle that required surgery and two weeks later a little trip to ICU with a massive blood clot in my lungs. While hospitalized someone decided to tell me that I am Diabetic. I had an A1C of 9.something% and my blood sugar was running 249'ish. I had insulin in the hospital but refused it for home and chose Metformin instead. I hate taking pills and was sporadic at best about taking the Metformin. I decided a few months later that this was nuts... I do not want to be killing myself with food any more and if my eating was so out of control that I have caused disease in my own body that something had to change and not expect a little pill to solve my problems. I choose to stop taking my meds. (Insert "stupid" disclaimer here- and dont just do what I did- thats not what this story is about) But I stopped taking them AND I started avoiding sugar & white foods as well as "fake foods" ( sorry friends, velveta, soda pop, fritos are not a real food.) I was making a little bit of headway and my blood sugar was improving but not very quickly.

In September I started my first 12 week session with Dan here at THF Orem . Within the first week my blood sugar stabilized and has remained "normal" since I have been following the THF plan. Today I had a check up and my A1C was 6.0% (needs to be under 7%) and everythign was normal. I asked my docotr what that means and she said it means that If I keep on in this manner I am not considered to have active diabetes. I dont have to schedule any more appointments, I am no longer tagged with a diagnosis of "diabetes". I have it completely controlled with diet & exercise. Sweet! woooo hooooo!

Good for you - way to go girl. I have not been diagnosed with diabetes yet - hope I never am but with those good ol' family genes, it's a possibility. And that I why I too decided to make a change - to hopefully ward off those things for awhile longer at least. I have watched too many people suffer from Diabetes in particular. So again, good job!!!!!
