Discover Life

Saturday I was walking my Dog and encountered people from a local running group. I talked with a couple and they said it is organized out of the Runners Corner in Orem. Are any of you a part of that group? Or know anything about it? I wonder if there are other total newbies in it.

The runners corner running club is called Sojourners. They do do a lot of runs together. I think there are a couple of other groups in the provo area. Dumbbells Gym in Payson is trying to get a running group together. But we just need to start our own THF running club and get together to do some runs especially since many of us in this group are running some spring races. The Provo River train is a good place to do runs on or HobbleCreek Canyon. I don't know how well the trails are paved during this time of year. Up in Salt lake area a lot of people run the jordan River Parkway. My sis-in-law runs it quite a bit still during the winter months.

ok, Novice here. So, I am out there in the snow doin' my new thing and it occurs to me that there are some things i need to learn.

1. is there a trick to breathing when you run/ jog?
2. should I be stretching? i just do it when i feel like it.
3. jogging is soo much easier with nice posture. For a while I tried different postures as I jogged. Interesting. .. I think the "catwalk" was the best. ( stand tall, shoulders back, lead with the hips), but try as I might I slumped right back down as I went along. Any pointers?
4. I learn something every time I go outside with my dog. We're moving along just fine when all of a sudden out runs mr. boxer tough dog. Of course my 6 pound "mightydog" (see pic on my page) was ready to take him on but I shooshed them both into compliance and successfully avoided boxer blood all over the sidewalk. (lucky dog!) LESSON: be on the lookout for unexpected stuff coming at you. I bet you all knew that already though.
5. I also learned on this run that I should have my eyes open and be looking ahead for obstacles. manhole covers are icy.

When I started running a few years back, I checked out Runners World. I found some good info on posture from there. I signed up for their magazine and would go to their website frequently. After a few years the magazine gets to be repetative, but can have some good info. I also think that losing the weight also helps with posture and improve running. So keep up the great work and see ya in April - are you still planning on the Salt Lake half. I will be running it too. I am not quite ready for a spring marathon yet.

Thanks. I was actually thinking about picking up a magazine or something. Yep, Im still doing the SLC in April. Its a real mental thing though. this week has been difficult to believe I can do it. I wonder why sometimes my brain is on board, and other times it is not. Grrrrr....
